Journey towards success
The importance of Girl’s education lay emphasis on the system of education prevailing in the society of a country .The challenges in the field and the possible measures to tide over difficulties paved way to the successful upcoming of a renowned school, St Mary’S C G H S S Ernakulam which is located at the heart of the city near Kerala High Court. This school was established for women empowerment by the CMC sisters under the vision of great philosopher and social reformer, St. KURIAKOSE ELIAS CHAVARA who was a pioneer in many fields.
On December 9th 1919 His Eminence Mar Louis Pazheparambil the Bishop of Ernakulam-Angamaly Archdiocese received a consent from the education authority of the time Mr. M S DAVIS to start a new school . On April 8th 1920,the first stone was laid for L P School and very soon in June in the same year English Medium school was begun for boys and girls .After 5 years, in 1925 this was uplifted to Lower Secondary School and started its functioning under the leadership of the Head Mistress Mrs . A A ISAAC and Rev.Sr.KOCHUTHRESIA CMC.
Identifying the challenges and difficulties faced by the girls around the society, a kind hearted scaffolding was offered for them by starting an orphanage ‘BALIKARAM ‘ which was a great solace for the orphan girls over years. There was another milestone in 1934 as the school was upgraded into high school and divided into LP, UP, and HS Section under the guidance of Rev.Sr.Terecitta.
St.Ann’s boarding started its functioning in 1940 to inculcate christian faith in the blooming minds along with education, as it was envisaged by the great reformer St. Kuriakose Elias Chavara. Within 5 years Nursery School was also started in 1945.As there aroused the need for more Care and Concern, in 1961 the school was directed to function under 2 different HMs for LP Section and HS section. Realising the importance of English as a global language and considering the opinion from the parents, a private English Medium school started parallel to the school.
In course of time ,the Golden Jubilee of the school was pompously celebrated in 1970. In commemoration of the Golden Jubilee a Technical school also began to function in the school premises. In 1984 the private section was registered into another school as RaniMatha Pulic School at Flower Junction.

Founders of CMC
Founder Name
Kuriakose Elias Chavara was born on 10th February 1805 in Kainakiri, Alapuzha. He joined the seminary at the age of 13 and was ordained on 29th November 1829. To his credit, there are many first in the history of Kerala. The first indigenous religious Congregation for men (CMI), Sanskrit school, the Catholic Press, The Indian Congregation for women (CMC).
St. Kuriakose Elias Chavara was a visionary who integrated contemplation and actions harmoniously in his life. Adorned with the gifts and fruits of the Holy Spirit, this man of God led a holy life preserving the baptismal grace all the while. He worked really hard to uplift woman and children who were backward spiritually and materially.
Rev. Fr Leopard Beccaro, an Italian Carmelite Missionary, was a man of deep prayer and zealous action. He studied Malayalam language and wrote spiritual books who help men to practice virtues and gave spiritual direction.
The spiritual bond that developed between St. Kuriakose and Fr. Leopard and his discussions that they had, helped St. Kuriakose to realise his dream of starting a convent. Thus it was hoped that besides looking after their own spiritual needs, the sisters could teach girls catechism along with other virtues and give them education. They both worked hard to make their dreams come true.
